Leros is a very picturesque island in the Dodecanese, situated between the neighbouring islands of Patmos and Kalymnos, and is the perfect destination for those seeking a relaxing and peaceful island in the Aegean.

The island is one with a very rich and lengthy history that goes back to the prehistoric ages. There are also monuments on Leros from the 4th century BC and also the Byzantine period.

The capital of Leros is Platanos, which is also home to the charming settlements of Agia Marina and Panteli. Together, they form a now unified city. Perched high up is the Byzantine castle of Panteli, which symbolises the island. From here, visitors can enjoy some spectacular panoramic views out towards the sea.

For visitors who are interesting in the impressive history of Leros, one essential place to visit is the Archaeological Museum, which is situated in Agia Marina. Here you will be able to view some very interesting exhibits and findings dating from various periods in the islands history.

The harbour of Leros is Lakkj, also known as Porto Lagos. This port was a very significant place and one of extreme strategic importance for the both the island of Leros as well as the whole region.

It is a very pretty village filled with luscious greenery and some very interesting architecture. As well as the harbour, there are also some other small yet beautiful villages around Leros, such as Alinda and Partheni, from which you can take a boat and head off to the small islet of Archngelos, which is ideal for swimming and bathing during the summer months.

There are plenty of beaches all around Leros, including the popular Vromolithos, Merikia and Belefouti beaches. Some of these beaches also provide the opportunity for watersports should you have an interest.

Leros is a perfect island for relaxed and laid back holidays. The combination of the traditional villages, and scenery make it a very tranquil place.

Some of the old churches on the island have wonderful wall frescoes and old icons that are well worth seeing. The scattering of ancient ruins also makes Leros a wonderful destination for those interested in the history and culture of the island.

Visitors to Leros will find a lovely choice of accommodation on the island including hotels, rooms, apartments and studios to let. For entertainment, there are many nice cafes and bars were you can enjoy a drink. For food, you will find a great choice of traditional tavernas, where you can sample a selection of local cuisine, as well as fresh fish.

Leros has boat and air connections with Athens, as well as boats travelling to the neighbouring island of Rhodes.
