TRADITIONAL MANSIONS & HOUSES IN GREECE AND THE GREEK ISLANDS

All over Greece, especially in the more rural regions of the country, you will find many traditional mansions and houses among the villages in those areas. These traditional mansions are huge buildings, usually more than 100 years old. Some of these buildings have sadly been left to ruins over the years. Others have been maintained over the years and generations and stand proud, amongst the newer smaller buildings of recent times.

The Greek word used for these buildings is Arhontiko (Archontiko), and many of these mansions and houses have their name following this word, for example, Arhontiko Athanasaki (meaning the Athanasaki Mansion).

These stunning mansions and houses are visually beautiful to look at. Even those which have been left to decay have an air of beauty about them, and most can make wonderful photo opportunities. Most of these mansions and houses were the homes of families, and act as a reminder to the importance of certain regions in Greece in days gone by.

The mountainous region of Pelion, for example, is home to many such traditional mansions and houses, and each one has played an important part in the history of the village that it is located in. The beautiful village of Portaria in Pelion houses some of the finest traditional mansions and traditional houses to be found in the area.

Over the years, some of these mansions have been transformed into accommodation facilities, and house guests from all over the world. The magic of staying in one of these traditional mansions or houses over a hotel or room is that you can feel part of the history of the building, and begin to appreciate how it was to have lived in such a building all those years ago.

Many of these traditional mansions and houses are beautifully decorated with antiquities and other objects from the past. They are in fact, similar to a small museum, in which time has seemingly stood still.
