Kythira Island - Ionian Islands Greece

The island of Kythira is one of the Ionian islands that is not situated where you would expect to find it. It is actually positioned just 10 nautical miles from the southern part of the Peloponnese region of Greece. It actually borders on the Ionian and Aegean seas.

Kythira is an island of exceptional beauty and one that has been well known from the ancient times of being the island of Aphrodite. It was also known as Porfirousa and Tsirigo in the ancient times.

The capital of Kythira is the town of Chora ( Hora ), which is located on the top of a hill overlooking the island.

In Chora visitors can take a walk and explore the town along the many narrow paths and arches. There are many Byzantine churches that one can visit, as well as the famous Venetian castle.

The views from here are amazing, offering a panoramic landscape of the bay of Kapsaliou, which is the entertainment centre of the island.

Visitors to Kythira should also try and pay a visit to the traditional fishing village of "Avlemonas". The village is very picturesque and colourful.

From here there is a road that will lead you to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Antikythira Island
