Symi - Dodecanese Islands
Symi is one of the most beautiful islands in the Dodecanese, and has a rich history that stretches back to the ancient ages, where is was known as the Kingdom of Nireas.
According to the writings of Homer, Nireas was one of the most handsome and brave of the Greeks, and he fought in the Trojan wars.
During his later years, he became famous through the trade of sponges and shipbuilding. Today Symi is considered a preserved settlement, where one can see an inspiring array of traditional houses and neoclassical buildings.
The harbour of the island is Panormitis, and here one can enjoy relaxing walks along the colourful coastline, listening to the sounds of the waves lapping up against the shore.
One place worth visiting on Symi is the Monastery of St.Michael. Here you will see the marvelous temples, and listen to the hundreds of stories and myths that the local people share about the place.
The capital of the island is Symi, which was formed from the settlements of Ano Symi and harbour of Gialos. The city is one that is very picturesque, with traditional two floor houses lining the streets.
Visitors to Symi should try and see the Castle of the Knights, the Archaeological and Folklore Museum, the Naval Museum and the many scattered churches dating back from the Byzantine period.
One popular destination on Symi is that of Emporios, or Nimborip as it is also known. The beautiful golden sand beach and crystal clear waters make it a wonderful paradise during the summer months.
Visitors can also take the opportunity to have a boat excursion, departing from the harbour of Panormities, and head to the nearby islet of Seskli. Here you can see the ancient ruins, as well as enjoy bathing at the delightful remote beach. You can also visit the other small islet of Nimos by taking a boat from the harbour or Gialos.
Symi offers visitors a great choice of accommodation, including rooms, apartments and studios to let, as well as hotels. The traditional tavernas and ouzeries have a tasty selection of cuisine on offer, as well as being a very friendly place to meet the locals of the island.
Symi has boat connections to Pireaus and the island of Rhodes. During the summer season, there are also boat connections to a choice of neighbouring Dodecanese islands.
