Nisyros - Dodecanese Islands
Situated in the middle of the Dodecanese, between Tilos and Kos is the small volcanic island of Nisyros. The island is an open geological park with beautiful hot springs, with the impressive volcano dominating the charming landscape.
The capital and harbour of Nisyros is Mandraki, where you will see the beautiful white houses climbing up to the top of a hill, on which stands proudly the Monastery of Panagia Piliani.
Here you can visit the interesting folklore museum and the old castle of Spiliani, which was built by the St.John Knights in 1314.
Nisyros is a wonderful island to visit, and is highly attractive and unique. It is unlike any of the other islands you will come across in the Dodecanese, and it will always be an island that will stay with you forever.
The picturesque fishing village of Pali is a popular destination for summer holidays on Nisyros. It has a very nice beach as well as an impressive cave along the coast.
From the harbour of Mandraki, visitors can take a small boat and sail around the coast of the island.
This is an excellent and unique way of finding a beach at which you can then make a stop and enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear waters. Alternatively you can sail to the small islet of Gyali and Nisides, where you will find a wonderful selection of sandy, isolated beaches.
For those who want to venture out and explore the island, you can head to the villages of Nikia or Emporios, which are located on the top around the volcano. The small size of Nisyros makes it an ideal island for trekking.
Visitors to Nisyros will also fins a lovely selection of accommodation including a variety of comfortable rooms, studios and apartments to rent.
There are also bars and cafeterias, as well as traditional tavernas offering you the chance to sample some of the local cheese specialities, as well as fresh sea food.
With boat connections to the port of Pireaus, as well as Kos and Rhodes, the island is one that is easily accessible.
During the summer months, you will also find boat connections from Nisyros
to the islands of Kalymnos, Patmos, Kastelorizo, Leros, Simi, Astypalea,
as well as the Cyclades islands of Amorgos, Naxos and Syros.
