As with the other islands in the Dodecanese, Kalymnos is an island with a history dating back to the ancient years. The island is also one with a very important Nautical history, as the brave and dedicated inhabitants of the island helped significantly in the success of the Greek revolution against the Turkish occupation in 1821.

Kalymnos is also a famous island for the local divers who daily venture into the waters to collect the beautiful sea sponges from the seabed.

One charming aspect of the landscape of Kalymnos is that it is surrounded by lots of small islets such as Telendos, Pserimos, Agia Kyriaki and Imia.

Visitors to the island have the opportunity to visit some of these islands, and enjoy the remote and isolated beaches that are found scattered along the coastline of the islets. There are small boats from the port that operate such excursions to these small islands.

The capital and harbour of the island is Kalymnos, or Pothia, as it is also known. It is a very picturesque small city, with a great deal of traditional architecture. There are many renovated neoclassical buildings that blend in perfectly with the modern villas and houses that have been built here.

It is well worth visiting the Nautical Museum that operates in the city, where you can see a wonderful exhibit of sea sponges and the story of the importance that they played in the history and development of the island.

Other places of interest on Kalymnos include the cave of the Nymphs, and the old Byzantine churches and monasteries, which house a wonderful display of impressive frescoes and religious icons.
