Syros Island - Cyclades Greece

Syros ( Siros ) is the capital island of the Cyclades, and is a very popular island for holidaymakers from both Greece and the rest of the world. After the Greek revolution, it became a large commercial centre.

During the 19th century, the port of Syros was the largest in Greece, and was operating before development had begun on the port of Pireaus in Athens.

As a naval and commercial centre, the economic welfare of the island grew rapidly, and evidence of this can be see in the impressive neoclassical buildings and large mansions that can be found all over the island.

One fine example of the neoclassical architecture that you can find in Syros is the town hall of the island, which is located in the capital city of Ermoupolis.

This highly impressive building was the work of a German architect called Er.Ciller.

Today, visitors to Syros will find the island one that is both peaceful and cosmopolitan, and where one can find all of the modern comforts and facilities.

There is a great selection of accommodation available including some delightful hotels, rooms, studios, villas and apartments to let.

For entertainment, the island has an excellent selection of bars, cafeterias, clubs and also a casino that is popular with visitors who are feeling a little lucky.

Syros has a great selection of tavernas including some where you can listen to live music. Many of these restaurants offer a great selection of sea food and fresh fish.

Syros has some wonderful beaches that are ideal for swimming, sea sports and relaxation under the summer sun. Some of the most popular beaches on Syros are those of Galissas, Armeo, Kini and Megalos Yialos in Posidonia.

Syros has excellent connections by boat with the ports of Pireaus and Rafina in Athens, as well as with the Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Athens airport. During the summer months, the airport caters for charter flights from all over Europe.
