Christmas in Athens Greece
There is something about the Christmas period in Athens, where the city seems to magically transform overnight. The twinkling lights and Christmas displays in the shop windows, the street lights, and or course, the beautiful display with the huge Christmas tree in the main square of Syntagma, all add to the Christmas feeling. Athens itself seems to resemble one giant and colourful Christmas decoration.
Each year, Syntagma square is transformed into a Christmas area, with the beautiful decorations, Christmas music, and a very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.
The square is the perfect place to visit with children, who can enjoy a ride of the magical carousel. They can also have their photograph taken with Santa Claus / Father Christmas, who you will find sitting under the huge christmas tree.
Around the square, along the roads leading towards Monastiraki and the famous Ermou shopping road, you will find a cariety of street performers, playing christmas music, dance and other interesting entertainment.
The shops themselves are beautifully decorated, and inside, you can do a range of christmas shopping, where you can find all types of products, clothing, toys and much more at very reasonable prices. Shopping in Athens during christmas can be a truly unique experience, and one that can be enjoyed by all of the family, from the old to the young.
Christmas is one of the largest celebrations in Greece, and is one with which everyone can enjoy and join in with the celebrations and the festivities. There are several traditions that take place in Greece during the christmas period, and these should truly be experienced to be fully appreciated.
On Christmas Eve and New Years eve, you will find groups of young children going round door to door carol singing with their musical "triangles". Their efforts are usually rewarded with some sweets or small amounts of money.
